In this generous and moving conversation, Nanaimo Poet Laureate Neil Surkan joins Kyeren Regehr to talk about what poetry can hold when the world feels uncertain: grief, tenderness, surprise, attention, and the possibility of being changed. Neil speaks with remarkable openness about the strange arrival of poems, the courage of vulnerability, the influence of parenthood, and the ways writing can become a place to stay present to what matters.

Their conversation keeps returning to listening—to poems, to one another, and to the world as it is. Neil reflects on poetry as a space where we can risk being unsettled, where grief can become companionship, and where tenderness can remain alive without becoming sentimental. The episode also features three poems by Neil, including a brand-new audio-first poem shared here for the first time.
